Translating your WordPress Site

Published in: WordPress — Tags: , , , , — jai

Global Translator is a free and open source Wordpress Plugin which is able to automatically translate your blog in an amazing number of languages.  This plugin will translate your content, on the fly with SEO-enabled and ready cached links, with just the click of a button.

If you are using Google Analytics, or any web analytics program, you can check to see how many international visitors your web site is receiving.  You can assume that some of these visitors can read English - but you are more likely to keep them coming back and/or to sell them products or services if you communicate in their native language.

The list of Global Translator’s supported languages continues to grow and by the time you read this the list might even include more than these 41 languages!  When you configure this plugin you can choose to support all 41 or by a checking or unchecking a box you can easily add and remove languages.  You’ll note that they even translate languages like Arabic and Hebrew which are written from right to left.

Italian, Korean, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Portuguese, English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Greek, Dutch, Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Polish, Romanian, Swedish, Norwegian, Catalan, Filipino, Hebrew, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Albanian, Estonian, Galician, Maltese, Thai, Turkish, Hungarian.

Global Translator provides these features by:

  • Integrating with Four different Translation Engines: Global Translator has the ability to provide the translations by using Google Translation Engine, Babel Fish, Promt, FreeTranslations.com.  You get to choose which translation engine you prefer.
  • Fast Caching System: new fast, smart, optimized, self-cleaning and built-in caching system. After a translation is made, Global Translator saves that file in your WordPress cache.  If your web page has not changed, than the next visitor who asks for that language will have the page automatically served.  The translation engines are free - but if you make too many calls they can decide ban your site from the translation service.
  • No database modifications: Global Translator is not intrusive. It doesn’t create or alter any table on your database. This removes the risk of conflicts with your site or other plugins.

If you have many international visitors you might consider upgrading to Global Translator PRO.  However, if you move to a paid product you should also consider Angsuman’s Translator Plugin Pro. It has some amazing powerful features, machine translation, more customizations, more languages supported, good caching.  Unlike Global Translator it does not hae a free less featured version, but it is less expensive than Global Translator PRO.
